THE ARTICLES
  1. The articles are, in fact, demonstrative adjectives, (this, that, these, those) however, they are separately explained because of the paramount importance in the study of the English language.

  1. There are 3 articles as far as number is concerned. They are ‘ a ‘, ‘ an ‘, and ‘ the ‘.  But ‘ a ‘ and ‘ an ‘ perform the same function ( they differ in their application ), there are in reality only two articles.  ‘ a ‘ or ‘ an ‘ and ‘ the ‘.   ‘ a ‘ or ‘ an ‘ is an abbreviated form of the adjective “ one “.  “ the “ is an abbreviated form of  “ this “, “ those “.

  1. A ( or an ) is  called the indefinite article since it points out a person or thing in general only.

  1. A boy ……………………..( which means any boy ).
  2. An apple …………………( which means any apple).

  1. “ The “ is called the definite article, since it points out a particular person or thing.
